GALENA CREEK is a hiking area that holds a wealth of late fall bloomers. This trail takes you along some vibrant fall colors with open views of the Sierra Mountain range and Washoe Valley.
Accessed along Highway 431, 13 miles over the summit -- after a series of switchbacks, look for the maintenance station and park at the dirt turnout on the left across from the station. Follow the faint trail to the west of the turnout. The path will drop down to the creek where you will travel a log crossing built along the creek. The trail connects to the Mount Rose Summit trail 4 miles from the turnout.
The trail begins in sagebrush and other natural foliage, winds past a local country club, and disappears into more brush lining the rocky-lined Galena Creek. Its relatively low elevation makes the hike a good fall or summer venture, and the forestation provides enough shade for midsummer. A picnic lunch at Callahan Park at the end may provide a satisfying ending.
