Hiking up Blackwood Canyon!

For those of you that are looking for something other than skiing,
I would suggest a walk up Blackwood Canyon. Blackwood is
located about ½ way between Tahoe City and Homewood Ski
Area on the West shore. There is a decent sign at the road and if you drive up
about 30 feet there is a somewhat hidden parking area that many people miss.
During the winter this road is used for snowmobiling so it’s pretty
compact (it is paved for the summer stroll and Roller Skating). It’s pretty
flat, so easy walking. I had anticipated using the snowshoes at first but found
that we didn’t need them.
We walked up the road for about ¾ of a mile and then strolled off
to the left and found this wonderful stream that seemed very surreal with its
soft mounds of snow rolling down to the creek bed. We were able to walk right
on top of the snow that day (remember after a fresh dump you might need those
snow shoes). We walked up the steam for about another ¾ mile. On one walk we
actually saw a beaver playing under a sheet of ice on the water. When it
spotted us, and the dogs, it quickly ducked under the bank.
The first time we went we only saw 2 other couples walking and 2
snowmobiles were coming back down as we were walking back down to the car. The
second time we didn’t see any snowmobiles and there were several groups, some
with small kids and sleds.
All in all we walked for about 2 hours at a very casual pace. If
you do go, don’t forget to take water and snacks, with a pair of gloves, hat
and something to layer with. Remember to be prepared you never know what will
roll in her in the Sierras.
See you out there,
Blane
